UrBackup: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

UrBackup is an open-source client/server network backup system that combines image and file backups. Backups run while the system is in use, including open files such as Outlook .pst files, and a client watches folders for changes so that incremental file backups stay fast. Identical files from several clients are stored only once. Restores are possible through the web interface, the client or Windows Explorer, and drive images can be restored with a bootable USB stick (bare-metal restore). The server runs on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and several NAS systems; the client runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

UrBackup is free software under the AGPLv3+ and is developed by Martin Raiber. Commercial add-ons and appliances are offered by Infscape UG (haftungsbeschränkt) in Ulm, Germany. You install UrBackup yourself, so you decide where the backups are stored, for example on servers in a European data centre. No non-European parent company is known, and the source code is public and can be inspected.

Why digital sovereignty matters with UrBackup

UrBackup is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so UrBackup scores best on data residency.

UrBackup is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs UrBackup together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
