Uyuni: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Uyuni is an open-source solution for configuration and infrastructure management of Linux systems. It uses Salt for configuration management, with the Uyuni server acting as Salt Master. Features include automated deployment of patches and packages through software channels, management of servers from edge devices to Kubernetes environments, rollout of hardened operating-system templates, and compliance auditing that flags systems drifting from security profiles. Uyuni runs on your own infrastructure. It is meant for organisations that manage large numbers of Linux machines and want an alternative to Microsoft Configuration Manager or Red Hat Satellite.

Uyuni officially became part of the openSUSE Project in 2026 and is the upstream of the commercial SUSE Multi-Linux Manager. The source code is available under the GPL-2.0 licence. Because you host the server yourself, you decide where management data is stored and no vendor cloud is required. The project is community-driven, with no separate commercial owner.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Uyuni

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Uyuni scores best on data residency.

Uyuni is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.
