VAITHEX: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

VAITHEX is a malware-prevention tool from PRESENSE Technologies GmbH that protects systems against threats arriving in files. It scans files with at least two antivirus scanners (extendable to four), blocks files by MIME type or extension, and cleans them through normalisation, including removing Office macros, JavaScript and other active content from Office and PDF files. Files can optionally be converted, for example from DOCX to PDF. It is installed as a network application, controlled through an asynchronous REST API, supports batch processing and logs via syslog. The company also makes the PROVAIA and JANUS data-gateway appliances, which check removable media.

PRESENSE Technologies GmbH is based in Hamburg, Germany. VAITHEX is installed by the customer, so files are processed on the customer's own systems and no hosted service is involved. The company states that it develops its PROVAIA appliance entirely in Germany and has signed the "IT Security made in Germany" initiative. For European organisations, a self-installed file-sanitisation gateway keeps incoming files inside their own infrastructure and jurisdiction.

Why digital sovereignty matters with VAITHEX

VAITHEX is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

VAITHEX runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

VAITHEX is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs VAITHEX together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
