Vector: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Vector is an open-source tool for building observability pipelines. It collects, transforms and routes logs and metrics from many sources to many destinations, and includes programmable transforms in its own language, Vector Remap Language (VRL). Written in Rust, it ships as a single binary and can run as a daemon, a sidecar or an aggregator, on Linux, Windows, macOS, Docker and Kubernetes. Configuration is done in YAML, TOML or JSON. Vector is software you run yourself and is not a hosted service.

Vector is maintained by Datadog, Inc., a US company, through its Community Open Source Engineering team, and is released under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. As the software runs in your own infrastructure, the telemetry passing through it stays where you deploy it, and you decide which destinations it is routed to. That lets a European organisation filter or redact data before it leaves its environment. The project's governance remains with its maintainer, Datadog, so roadmap decisions rest with a single US company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Vector

Vector is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Vector hosts data outside the EU (self-hosted). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Vector is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Vector together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best European alternative to Vector?

It depends on your use case. Strong EU alternatives to Vector include Adverity, Axual and CloverDX. On this page you can compare 8 EU alternatives by jurisdiction, data residency and open-source status.

Are there open-source alternatives to Vector?

Yes. Open-source EU alternatives to Vector include dlt (dltHub) and HiveMQ. These keep your data fully under your own control and let you self-host if you want to.

Is Vector GDPR-compliant and where is the data hosted?

Vector is headquartered in US and hosts data in self-hosted. The vendor states it is GDPR-compliant, but the data falls under non-EU jurisdiction. For full EU data residency the EU alternatives on this page usually offer more certainty.
