Vendure: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Vendure is an open-source, headless commerce platform built with TypeScript, NestJS and GraphQL, with an admin dashboard in React. It manages catalogue, orders, customers, promotions, tax, shipping, payments and stock, and serves any frontend through a GraphQL API. The commercial Vendure Platform targets complex B2B commerce with company accounts, quotes, approvals and contract pricing. You can host Vendure yourself or use Vendure Cloud, which according to Vendure is a managed environment running on infrastructure from Northflank.

Vendure is an Austrian business: the publisher Elevantiq GmbH has its registered office in Oberndorf in Tirol and an office in Vienna. The core is licensed under GPLv3, with an exception that lets you release your own plugins under a licence of your choice. For Vendure Cloud, the vendor says you can select a region, including Frankfurt, Zurich and the Netherlands, and that the application, database, storage and backups stay in the chosen region. Self-hosting gives you full control over location. Confirm region availability during onboarding.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Vendure

Vendure is headquartered in AT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Vendure hosts data in EU, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Vendure is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Vendure together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
