Videoland: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Videoland, also branded Videoland by RTL, is a Dutch streaming service for series, films and original productions. It began as a chain of video rental stores and is now a video-on-demand service; since 2015 it has also produced its own programmes, such as the series Mocro Maffia. You use it as a hosted web service and app. Videoland is not open source.

Videoland is part of RTL Nederland, based in Hilversum. DPG Media acquired RTL Nederland from RTL Group on 1 July 2025; DPG Media is a Belgian media group, so the ultimate owner sits outside the Netherlands but within the EU. Until 30 June 2026 Videoland was registered as a video-on-demand service in Luxembourg and fell under Luxembourg law; since 1 July 2026 it is registered in the Netherlands. The pages consulted do not state where Videoland hosts data, and there is no US parent company, so ownership gives no CLOUD Act signal.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Videoland

Videoland is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in BE, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Videoland scores best on data residency.

Videoland is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Videoland together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
