VITAM is an open-source platform for electronic archiving. It is intended for public bodies and other organisations that must keep digital archives for the long term, and keep them searchable. The software consists of a core back-office system and a web interface (Vitam UI), with an API for submitting archive packages. You install VITAM on your own infrastructure.
VITAM is developed by the French state's interministerial Vitam programme, in which several ministries cooperate; the software is meant to be reused by many public organisations. The source code is on GitHub under the CeCILL 2.1 licence, an OSI-approved open-source licence, while the documentation uses the Licence Ouverte. Besides the software, the programme offers a hosted archiving service, Vitam accessible en service. If you run VITAM yourself, the archive data stays within your own environment. VITAM is listed in the French SILL, the government's list of recommended free software.
