Carbone is a document generation platform from CarboneIO SAS, based in Bellevigny in the Vendée. It merges JSON data with templates designed in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or HTML and produces PDF, DOCX and XLSX files. Business users can edit the templates themselves. The engine is available as a cloud API, through an MCP server, with no-code connectors, and as an on-premise installation with Docker or Kubernetes.
The company states that its cloud infrastructure runs in France at OVHcloud, which cites ISO/IEC 27001 certification and SecNumCloud qualification for parts of its offering. According to the security policy, Carbone Cloud stores templates but not the JSON data or generated documents beyond what delivery requires. For on-premise deployments, CarboneIO says it has no access to templates or data. The Community Edition is licensed under a source-available agreement that prohibits offering the engine as a hosted service, so it is not open source. For a European organisation this means French jurisdiction and EU hosting, with self-hosting as an alternative.
