Waarp: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Waarp is an open-source managed file transfer platform developed by WAARP SAS of Nanterre, France. It has three components. Waarp Transfer is the transfer agent and natively implements the R66 protocol. Waarp Gateway bridges that protocol to PeSIT, SFTP, HTTP(S), FTP(S) and R66-TLS and is designed for use in a DMZ. Waarp Manager is a web interface for central administration and supervision of all transfers. Waarp is aimed at organisations that want to automate file exchange between systems and partners and keep it traceable. The software runs in your own environment.

WAARP SAS is based in France, and the company website mentions no foreign parent company. Because you install the software yourself, you decide where files are stored; the vendor does not mention a cloud service of its own. The source code of the core components is available under the GPLv3 licence, so you can self-host and avoid dependence on a single supplier. Waarp Manager falls outside that licence, so an agreement with the vendor is needed for that component.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Waarp

Waarp is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Waarp scores best on data residency.

Waarp is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Waarp together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
