Wattpad: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Wattpad is a platform for stories and readers, where writers publish fiction and readers comment on stories and follow communities. It also offers a writing space and resources for authors, and it is available as a website and as apps for mobile devices. For users in Europe, the controller of personal data is Wattpad Corp., based in Toronto. Wattpad is a consumer publishing and entertainment service, not an enterprise tool.

Wattpad is headquartered in Toronto, Canada. Wattpad is part of WEBTOON Entertainment, which is linked to Naver Corporation of South Korea and LY Corporation of Japan. The privacy policy states that services are run mainly from Canadian offices, that data may be processed in the United States where Wattpad has servers, and that third-party providers may store data in Canada or the United States. No European hosting region is named. A European organisation using the platform for official communication therefore relies on Canadian and US processing arrangements.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Wattpad

Wattpad is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in KR. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Wattpad hosts data outside the EU (OTHER, US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Wattpad is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Wattpad together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
