Windows Autopatch is a Microsoft cloud service that automatically rolls out updates for Windows, Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Teams on enrolled devices. Administrators use the Microsoft Intune admin center to manage update rings, Autopatch groups, quality and feature updates, driver updates and reports. Updates are released in phases to groups of devices to limit disruption for users. It is delivered as SaaS.
Windows Autopatch is operated by Microsoft, headquartered in the United States. The service is covered by the Microsoft Data Protection Addendum and by the EU Data Boundary commitments. According to Microsoft, update policy data is stored in an Azure datacentre in either North America or Europe, while other data follows the data residency of your Microsoft 365 tenant. Because the parent company is American, US jurisdiction such as the CLOUD Act continues to apply even when data is stored in the EU. A European organisation that wants to keep its workplace management independent should weigh this dependency on Microsoft Intune and Entra ID.
