WOW: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

WOW is a German streaming service that offers series, films and live sport, which viewers can watch at any time and in any place. It is operated by Sky Deutschland Fernsehen GmbH & Co. KG in Unterföhring, near Munich. In Germany, WOW sits alongside RTL+ in the streaming market. The brands used on the site are owned by Sky Limited and used under licence.

Sky Deutschland was previously a subsidiary of Comcast, which sold it to RTL Group; the acquisition was completed on 1 June 2026. As a German operating company, Sky Deutschland is subject to EU and German data-protection law. For a European organisation, this means the service is run by a German company within RTL Group, which has been the owner since June 2026. The deal unites two German streamers, RTL+ and WOW, under one group.

Why digital sovereignty matters with WOW

WOW is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so WOW scores best on data residency.

WOW is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs WOW together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
