Yate (Yet Another Telephony Engine) is an open-source telephony engine that can be used as an extensible IP PBX. It supports SIP and other telephony protocols and can act as a VoIP server or client, a conference server, an interactive voice response (IVR) engine or a gateway between VoIP and the public telephone network. Functions can be extended with scripts in languages such as Perl, Python and PHP. The software is intended for organisations and operators that want to run their own telephony infrastructure, and it is distributed as software rather than as a hosted service.
The software is developed by NullTeam, a Romanian company, so the developer is established in the European Union. Yate is released under the GNU General Public License version 2, an OSI-approved open-source licence. When the software runs on infrastructure the operator controls, call data and recordings stay under that operator's control, which suits European organisations that want to reduce dependence on proprietary PBX platforms.
