Ably: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Ably provides a realtime messaging platform for developers, delivered as a managed cloud service. Its products include Pub/Sub, Chat, AI Transport, LiveObjects, Spaces and LiveSync. Applications connect through SDKs for languages and platforms such as JavaScript, Python, Java, .NET, Swift and Flutter. In addition to its native WebSocket protocol, Ably supports MQTT, SSE, AMQP, STOMP and clients of Pusher and PubNub. The MQTT adapter does not support presence, which matters for IoT connectivity.

Ably is operated by Ably Realtime Ltd., which states that it is located in the United Kingdom, with a postal address in London; the United Kingdom is not an EU member state. Ably runs globally distributed regions. For enterprise customers, stored data and transient realtime traffic can be kept on servers in the EU or the US through a regional endpoint; this restriction does not cover persistent history unless a placement constraint is used. Enterprise customers can also obtain dedicated clusters on Amazon EC2. The privacy policy names AWS among its providers and notes that some providers are outside the EEA.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Ably

Ably is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Ably hosts data in EU, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Ably is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Ably together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
