Activepieces: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Activepieces is an automation platform that lets teams build AI agents, workflows (flows), chat, tables and a knowledge base in one workspace. A visual builder supports branching, retries, approval steps and error handling, with inline TypeScript where needed. The platform connects to hundreds of apps, can expose flows as an MCP server and lets you bring your own AI models and keys. Enterprise features include single sign-on, role-based permissions and audit logs. You can use Activepieces Cloud or self-host the software with Docker or Kubernetes, including fully air-gapped.

The Community Edition is open source under the MIT licence, while enterprise features fall under a separate commercial licence. According to the website, Activepieces Cloud runs in Frankfurt, and when you self-host you decide where the data lives. The company took part in Y Combinator's Summer 2022 batch. For European organisations, self-hosting means data and workflows can remain entirely under their own control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Activepieces

Activepieces is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Activepieces scores best on data residency.

Activepieces is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Activepieces together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
