Airlock: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Airlock is a security platform from Ergon Informatik for access management and for protecting web applications and APIs. The Secure Access Hub includes Airlock IAM, with single sign-on, two-factor authentication, self-service and adaptive authentication, and Airlock Gateway, which combines a web application firewall with an API security gateway. A lightweight Microgateway is available for container environments. Airlock IAM is also offered as a cloud service in which Ergon's experts handle operation, maintenance and updates.

Airlock is developed and operated by Ergon Informatik AG, based in Zurich, Switzerland. The site names no shareholders or parent company. According to the provider, the cloud service is hosted in Switzerland across several data centres. The company states that the SaaS and on-premises versions share the same software core, so customers can move between the two without lock-in. The product is not presented as open source. For a European organisation, the Swiss base and Swiss hosting are the relevant points, and the processing of data should be set out in the contract.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Airlock

Airlock is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Airlock runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Airlock is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Airlock together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
