Bare.ID: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Bare.ID is a managed identity and access management platform built on Keycloak, the open-source identity core. It adds enterprise features and an administration interface and takes over operational and security responsibility for that core, including patches and version upgrades. Capabilities include single sign-on, multi-factor authentication with passkeys, identity lifecycle management and role- and policy-based access, with connections via SAML, OpenID Connect and SCIM. It can be delivered as SaaS, hybrid, self-hosted or fully on-premises.

Bare.ID GmbH is based in Wiesbaden, Germany, and grew out of the AOE Group. Development, operations and support take place in and from Germany. According to the vendor, all data is processed exclusively in German data centres certified under ISO 27001 and BSI C5, among others. The Keycloak core is open source, and Bare.ID states you can switch back to plain Keycloak at any time. For a European organisation this means an EU-based vendor with EU hosting.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Bare.ID

Bare.ID is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Bare.ID scores best on data residency.

Bare.ID is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.
