BankID is Sweden's national electronic identification service. People use a digital identity issued by their bank to identify themselves to online services, for bank logins, Swish payments, e-government services and access to some health records. It is delivered as an app or card and operates as a service for the banks and the organisations that accept it.
BankID is run by Finansiell ID-Teknik BID AB, based in Stockholm and owned by several Swedish and Scandinavian banks. No single majority owner is recorded, so no non-EU parent is set. As a Swedish company, the operator is subject to EU and Swedish law. The public information reviewed does not state where identity data is processed, so a European organisation should confirm this with the operator. The service is not open source and cannot be self-hosted by a European organisation, so using it means relying on a national Swedish identification scheme.
