AnythingLLM: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

AnythingLLM is an AI application that lets you chat with your own documents and use AI agents without much configuration. You use it as a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, or run it with Docker on your own servers for multi-user setups. It works with local models and with external language model, embedding and vector database providers of your choice. There is also an Android app, and the vendor offers a hosted variant.

AnythingLLM is maintained by Mintplex Labs, Inc., a US company, and is open source under the MIT licence. According to the vendor, documents do not leave your device in local use; the web search feature does use the external service You.com. By default the software sends anonymous usage statistics through PostHog, without the content of chats or documents. You turn this off with the DISABLE_TELEMETRY setting. When you self-host, your organisation decides where data is stored; if you choose an external model provider, prompts go to that provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with AnythingLLM

AnythingLLM is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

AnythingLLM hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

AnythingLLM is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs AnythingLLM together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
