Lumo is the AI assistant from Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail, Proton VPN and Proton Drive. With Lumo you can summarise documents, generate code and draft text. The assistant is available as a web application and as apps for iOS and Android. You can start without an account; a Proton account syncs saved conversations across devices. Lumo is based on open-source language models.
Proton AG is headquartered in Switzerland. According to Proton, the models run exclusively on servers that Proton controls, in Europe, and queries are not sent to third parties. Saved chats use zero-access encryption, so only you can read them, and Proton states that it keeps no logs of prompts or responses and does not use conversations to train models. The code of the web and mobile apps is open source (GPLv3); the server code is not. For a European organisation this means a Swiss provider with no foreign parent company and processing in Europe; exact datacentre locations may change as Proton moves infrastructure.
