Apache Druid is an open-source, real-time analytics database. According to the project, it returns query results in under a second on both streaming and batch data, including high-cardinality data and many concurrent queries. It ingests streams natively from Apache Kafka and Amazon Kinesis, supports SQL for ingestion, transformation and querying, and stores data in a columnar, time-indexed, compressed form. Its ingestion, query and orchestration components are loosely coupled and use a deep storage layer, so clusters scale out; backup, recovery and replication are included. Druid is software you download, install and operate yourself.
Druid is a project of the Apache Software Foundation, a US non-profit (501(c)(3)), and is released under the Apache License 2.0. Because there is no vendor-operated Druid service behind the software, data stays where you deploy it: on your own servers, at an EU hosting provider or in a cloud region you choose. A European organisation therefore controls location and access itself, and also takes on the operation and maintenance of the cluster.
