MonetDB: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MonetDB is a relational database system for analytics. It supports SQL with keys, joins, views, triggers, stored procedures and full ACID transactions, as well as advanced features such as window functions and ROLLUP/CUBE. For performance it uses columnar storage, parallel execution across multiple CPU cores and, where useful, additional indexes. You install and run MonetDB yourself; no hosted service is required.

MonetDB is free software under the Mozilla Public License 2.0; older versions use the MonetDB Public License 1.1. The intellectual property and long-term development are overseen by the MonetDB Foundation, an independent not-for-profit organisation formed in December 2023 and located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The software is developed by a small core team and volunteer contributors; commercial support is available through MonetDB Solutions. Because you run the system in your own environment, you decide where the data resides.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MonetDB

MonetDB is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so MonetDB scores best on data residency.

MonetDB is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MonetDB together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
