Exasol is an in-memory, column-oriented analytics database. It runs on a cluster of standard servers and is queried through SQL. Exasol targets data warehousing, analytics and AI workloads and supports, among other things, the Model Context Protocol. The software is available as a fully managed SaaS service (using Amazon S3 for storage), on your own hardware (on-premises) and in customers' own cloud environments; Exasol Personal is a free edition for personal use.
Exasol AG is headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany. The software is proprietary and not open source. Organisations that install the database themselves decide where the data resides, whether on-premises or in a cloud of their choice; Exasol Personal can be deployed on AWS, Azure, Exoscale and STACKIT. In the SaaS variant, storage runs on Amazon S3. The hosting region is not stated in the sources consulted, so a European organisation should fix that region contractually.
