Apache Kafka is an open-source platform for distributed event streaming. Organisations use it for data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration and business-critical applications. Kafka stores event streams durably in a fault-tolerant cluster, offers stream processing with joins, aggregations and filters, and includes Kafka Connect for linking to systems such as Postgres, JMS, Elasticsearch and AWS S3. Kafka is software that you run yourself, on your own servers or in a cloud of your choice.
Kafka is developed by the Apache Software Foundation, a US non-profit corporation headquartered in Delaware, and is released under the Apache License 2.0. Because the software is open source and self-hosted, you decide where the cluster and the event data reside. A European organisation can therefore run Kafka in EU data centres and keep full control over its data. If you use a managed Kafka service from a third party instead, the location and jurisdiction of that provider apply.
