Aiven: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Aiven is a managed data platform built on open-source technology. Its offering includes PostgreSQL, MySQL, Valkey, Apache Kafka, ClickHouse, OpenSearch and Grafana, complemented by metrics, data governance and a runtime for applications and agents. The services run as SaaS on several cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, DigitalOcean, UpCloud and OVHcloud) across many regions worldwide. With Bring Your Own Cloud, the service runs in your own AWS, Google Cloud or Azure account while Aiven provides the management layer.

Aiven Oy is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, and is therefore a European company. The region you choose determines where your data resides; there is no offering that runs exclusively in the EU, and many regions sit with US hyperscalers, which are themselves subject to US legislation such as the CLOUD Act. Choosing a European region at a European cloud provider such as OVHcloud or UpCloud reduces that exposure. The underlying databases are open source; the Aiven platform itself is not.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Aiven

Aiven is headquartered in FI and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Aiven hosts data in EU, US, APAC. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Aiven is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Aiven together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
