The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is a physically and logically separate AWS cloud infrastructure with, according to AWS, all components located within the EU. The first Region is in Brandenburg, Germany; Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal are planned. It offers services such as Amazon EC2, Lambda, EKS, S3, Aurora, KMS and Bedrock, with its own IAM and billing systems. Customers consume it as a public cloud, contracted through Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL.
AWS has the cloud run by dedicated European legal entities under German law. Operations, technical support and customer service are carried out by EU residents located in the EU. Customer content and metadata stay in the EU. However, the parent company is Amazon in the US, and analysts point out that the US CLOUD Act and sanctions rules may therefore still apply. The software is not open source. For a European organisation this means EU data residency and EU operation, but with a US owner.
