Ashampoo Backup: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Ashampoo Backup Pro is backup software for Windows. It backs up files, folders, drives and full system images, with real-time backup of chosen folders, scheduled plans (daily, weekly or custom), plans that start when a drive is connected, selective restore and a viewer to browse archives without restoring them. Destinations include internal and external drives, USB sticks, network drives and cloud services such as OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive. Backups are compressed and support AES encryption, and a bootable Windows-based rescue system on DVD or USB can restore a full backup if Windows will not start. It is delivered as downloadable software sold by licence.

Ashampoo GmbH & Co. KG is headquartered in Rastede, Germany; its parent company is HILCHNER & BOGENA Beteiligungs GmbH. The software is proprietary and runs on your own computer. Where backup data ends up depends on the destination you choose: local drives and a NAS keep it under your control, while the cloud services listed are run by third parties whose own jurisdiction applies.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Ashampoo Backup

Ashampoo Backup is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Ashampoo Backup runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Ashampoo Backup is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Ashampoo Backup together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
