Backup4all: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Backup4all is Windows backup software that protects personal and business files and can back up to several destinations, including Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Box and HiDrive. It runs on Windows 11 back to Windows Server 2008 and is installed on the user's own computers rather than run as a vendor-hosted service.

The software is developed by S.C. Softland S.R.L., a Romanian company based in Cluj-Napoca and founded in 1999, so the vendor is established in the EU. The software is not open source. Because it runs on the customer's own systems, the backups are stored wherever the customer sends them. A US cloud destination brings US law into play for that copy. A European organisation can keep the whole chain within the EU by choosing European or self-operated storage.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Backup4all

Backup4all is headquartered in RO and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Backup4all runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Backup4all is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Backup4all together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
