authentik is an open-source identity provider (IdP) for single sign-on. It supports OAuth2/OIDC, SAML, LDAP, SCIM and RADIUS, and offers multi-factor authentication including WebAuthn (passkeys), conditional access and an application proxy, and it can federate with external sources. It is designed for self-hosting, from small setups to large production clusters, and is installed with Docker Compose or Kubernetes (Helm). Alongside the free open-source version there is an Enterprise version, offered as source-available software with additional features and a support centre.
authentik is developed by Authentik Security Inc., a public benefit company launched by Open Core Ventures. The core of the code is under the MIT licence; code in the enterprise directory has a separate licence. According to the sources consulted, the vendor does not run a hosted cloud service of its own, so you run authentik yourself on infrastructure of your choice, for example in a European data centre, and the data stays within your environment. Dependence on the vendor is then limited to the software and any enterprise support.
