Azure Data Lake Storage is a set of capabilities within Azure Blob Storage, designed for big data analytics. Enabling the hierarchical namespace on a storage account organises data into directories and files, makes operations such as renaming a directory atomic, and provides Hadoop-compatible access through the ABFS driver for frameworks such as Apache Spark and Presto. Access is controlled with Azure role-based access control and POSIX-style access control lists, and data is encrypted at rest with Microsoft-managed or customer-managed keys. The service is delivered as a managed cloud service.
Azure is operated by Microsoft, a US company headquartered in Redmond, Washington, so US legislation such as the CLOUD Act can apply to data held in Azure. You choose the region of each storage account and can replicate data to a secondary region. According to Microsoft, its EU Data Boundary commits it to store and process customer data for Azure services deployed in an EU region within the EU and EFTA, with limited exceptions. The service is proprietary, not open source, and cannot be self-hosted.
