Azure Synapse Analytics is a cloud service from Microsoft for data warehousing and big-data analytics. It combines SQL and Apache Spark workloads, data integration pipelines and connections to Power BI in one workspace, and it can link operational databases through Azure Synapse Link. Compute and storage scale independently. The service is offered as a cloud-native, pay-as-you-go service sold only through Azure.
Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, so US legislation such as the CLOUD Act can apply to data the company holds, whatever the region. You choose the Azure region in which the service runs. According to Microsoft's EU Data Boundary, the company stores and processes customer data of regional Azure services deployed in an EU or EFTA region within those countries, with limited exceptions. Microsoft also promotes Microsoft Fabric as the platform to which Synapse workloads can be migrated, so organisations starting a new project should weigh that when choosing.
