BBEdit: sovereignty score and 7 European alternatives

BBEdit is a professional text, code and HTML editor for macOS, developed by Bare Bones Software. It offers grep searching with Perl-compatible regular expressions, search and replace across multiple files, project tools, syntax colouring, code folding, text completion and HTML tools. Files can be opened and saved over FTP and SFTP; Git, Subversion and Perforce are supported, as are AppleScript and Unix scripting. BBEdit is a local Mac application, universal for Intel and Apple silicon. After a 30-day evaluation it continues in a free mode; paid features return with a licence or a Mac App Store subscription.

Bare Bones Software is a US company based in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts. BBEdit has been released since 1992 and is proprietary software with a freemium model. According to the privacy policy, the version check contacts Bare Bones' web server, which logs the date, time, IP address and an identifier (a hash of the hardware UUID); Mac App Store versions do not include this check. Beyond that, the software does not rely on a cloud service to edit your files.

Why digital sovereignty matters with BBEdit

BBEdit is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

BBEdit hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

BBEdit is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs BBEdit together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
