Grammalecte: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Grammalecte is an open-source grammar and typography checker for French. It is available as an extension for LibreOffice and OpenOffice, as an add-on for Firefox and Thunderbird, as a Python package for the command line, and as a plug-in for editors such as Vim, Emacs and Sublime Text. There is not yet a version for Chrome. The project is released under the GNU General Public License v3.

The project was originally written by an individual developer (2011 to 2025). Since January 2026 it has been maintained by Algoo, an independent free-software company based in Moirans in the Isère department of France. According to the FAQ, text is analysed on the user's own computer, and the Firefox add-on sends no information online, according to the project site. Because it is open-source software, an organisation can review the code and run it on its own systems. The project site contains no GDPR statement; this is consistent with local processing, but it also means there is no contractual commitment from the maintainer.
