Notepad++ is a free source-code editor and Notepad replacement for Microsoft Windows. It offers syntax highlighting, code folding and limited autocompletion for dozens of programming languages, regular-expression search and replace, macros, split-screen editing and a tabbed interface. The editor is built on the Scintilla component, can be extended with plugins, and runs locally as a desktop program rather than as a hosted service.
Notepad++ is open source under the GNU General Public License (version 3 or later since 2021) and was started by Don Ho in 2003. The source code and releases are published on GitHub, and releases have been GPG-signed since version 7.6.5. Because the program is installed locally and edits files on your own computer, no vendor-hosted cloud service is involved in normal use. A European organisation can therefore manage and distribute the software within its own environment; the origin of any plugins you install is worth checking separately.
