Scribens: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Scribens is a spelling and grammar checker that explains the rules behind each correction. It flags errors in spelling, grammar, conjugation, agreement, homophones, punctuation and typography, and also offers rewriting, style suggestions and a text summariser. More than forty languages are supported, including French, English, Spanish and German. You use Scribens through the website, Chrome and Firefox extensions, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Google Docs, Gmail, mobile apps and an API for developers.

Scribens is a French SARL registered with the Montpellier trade and companies register. According to its privacy policy, entered text is not stored on its servers or passed to third parties; only for Premium customers who activate the backup function are recent texts kept for seven days as drafts. Requests travel over an SSL connection and through a Cloudflare web application firewall. The policy notes that some service providers may process data outside the EU, with appropriate safeguards. It does not state where the servers are hosted. The software is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Scribens

Scribens is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Scribens scores best on data residency.

Scribens is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Scribens together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
