It supports more than 30 languages and dialects. It is delivered as browser add-ons, email and Office plugins, desktop apps for macOS and Windows, and a proofreading API.

LanguageTool originated in Germany under its founder Daniel Naber and has been part of Learneo, Inc., a US company based in California, since 2023. Since December 2024, Learneo has been the data controller under the privacy policy, so personal data may be processed outside Germany. Learneo states that it no longer uses user input to train its language models. The source code is public and a local server can be self-hosted, although that version lacks the AI-based rules, which are available only in the cloud. The sources reviewed do not state where the cloud servers are located. With a US parent, the self-hosted option is worth considering for a European organisation.
