Ghostwriter is a distraction-free text editor for Markdown. It offers a full-screen mode, a live HTML preview, light and dark themes, a sidebar outline and a focus mode that highlights the current line, sentence or paragraph. It also provides document statistics, export through Pandoc, MultiMarkdown and CommonMark, and autosave with file backup. It is a desktop application for Linux, Windows and macOS and an alternative to commercial writing apps such as iA Writer or Typora.
Ghostwriter comes from the KDE community and is free software under the GPL-3.0 or later; its source code is on KDE Invent. The non-profit KDE e.V. is based in Berlin. The program works on files on the user's own device and is not tied to a hosted service, so texts stay under the user's control. That matters mainly as a replacement for writing tools that keep documents in a foreign provider's cloud. Data residency and GDPR compliance depend on how the organisation's own computers and backups are managed.
