Kate: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Kate is a fast text editor from KDE in which several documents and views can be open at once. The program supports LSP, git integration and a built-in terminal, and runs on Linux, BSD, Windows and macOS. Kate is aimed primarily at programmers. It is a desktop application that runs locally on the user's device; there is no vendor cloud service. The source code is available under the LGPL-2.1 or later.

Kate is developed by the KDE community. Legal and financial matters are handled by KDE e.V., a registered non-profit association with its seat in Berlin, Germany. The KDE privacy policy, which covers all KDE software, states that software does not transmit information from the user's device except as a result of an explicit user action, and that telemetry is opt-in and disabled by default. The policy does not mention the GDPR by name. For a European organisation this is open-source software from a German non-profit that does not depend on a foreign cloud provider, although modified versions from third-party distributors may differ.
