BNGbox is software for a Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) from BISDN, aimed at broadband network operators. It runs as an application on a Kubernetes cluster of ordinary servers, as containerised network functions. Control plane and user plane are separated, following the Broadband Forum's TR-459 architecture, and sessions can be moved between user planes while running. Features include IPoE/DHCP and PPPoE, RADIUS, hierarchical QoS, BGP, a REST API and a CLI. BNGbox is assembled from open-source components such as Accel-ppp, ISC Kea, FRRouting, VPP/DPDK and FreeRADIUS.
BISDN GmbH is based in Berlin, Germany. No foreign parent company is named. BNGbox itself is not open source: the sources of the open-source components used are supplied, while BISDN's integration code stays with the company and can be deposited with a third party on request. The operator installs BNGbox on its own servers, so subscriber data stays in its own infrastructure; hosting by BISDN is not mentioned. Open interfaces and ordinary hardware limit dependence on a single manufacturer.
