Braintree: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Braintree is a payment platform for businesses that covers the whole checkout. Through one integration, online shops and apps can accept credit and debit cards, digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, PayPal, Venmo (US only) and local payment methods. Developers use Drop-in UI, Hosted Fields and SDKs, and the platform adds a vault for customer and payment data, 3D Secure 2 and fraud management. It is a service hosted by PayPal. PayPal now presents Braintree as PayPal Enterprise Payments.

Braintree is a subsidiary of PayPal, which acquired the company in 2013; PayPal Holdings is headquartered in San Jose, California, and so falls under US jurisdiction. According to its privacy statement, PayPal and its service providers store and process personal data in the United States and elsewhere in the world. PayPal documents no EU hosting option. For European merchants this means payment and customer data ends up with a US provider. They should therefore review the data protection addendum, the transfer mechanisms and the split of roles between controller and processor with care.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Braintree

Braintree is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Braintree hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Braintree is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Braintree together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
