cartes.gouv.fr is the new public mapping portal of IGN, the French national institute for geographic and forest information. It succeeds the Géoportail, which closes on 30 September 2026, and brings together services that were previously spread across several IGN platforms. In the browser, users can view map layers, search addresses, plan routes and measure distances and areas. After a professional launch in late 2025, the portal opened to the general public in June 2026.
IGN is a French national institute, so the portal is run by a French organisation and falls under French and EU law, without a foreign parent company. For European public bodies and companies, this makes it a national reference source for French map data that does not depend on a US platform. Route and address queries are still sent to the service, so check its data protection terms before using it in sensitive workflows.
