Ceph is a free, open-source storage system that combines object, block and file storage in one distributed cluster. It exposes storage through the Object Gateway (RGW), the block device (RBD) and the CephFS file system, and to Kubernetes through the CSI driver. Ceph runs on standard servers, keeps redundant copies of data and is designed without a single point of failure. It is installed and operated by the user.
Ceph is an open-source project under the LGPL licence. Since 2018 it has been supported by the Ceph Foundation, a directed fund of the Linux Foundation in the United States. Red Hat acquired Inktank, the company behind Ceph, in 2014. Because you host Ceph yourself, you decide where the data resides, for example in your own data centre or with a European hosting provider. No vendor-run cloud service is required.
