Webex is Cisco's collaboration platform for video meetings, messaging, calling and contact centres. Its products include Webex Meetings, Webex Messaging, Webex Calling, Webex Contact Center and related devices. They are delivered as a cloud service, with an app for workplaces and meeting rooms. Webex began in 1995 as WebEx Communications and was acquired by Cisco in 2007.
Cisco, the parent company, is headquartered in San Jose, California, in the United States, so the service falls under US jurisdiction even when data is stored in Europe. Webex offers EU data residency: customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa are provisioned to European data centres in Frankfurt, with a backup site in Amsterdam. Cisco states that new customers who signed up after 1 July 2022 can store personal, billing and analytics data as well as calling, meeting and messaging data in the EU, apart from limited exceptions. Encryption keys are created and stored in the organisation's own region. The country selected during setup determines the region, and migration between regions is not currently supported. Webex is not open source.
