Cloud Carbon Footprint is an open-source tool that estimates the energy use and carbon emissions of cloud usage. It combines billing and usage data from AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure in one view and lets you break results down by provider, account, service and time period. Emissions from manufacturing the hardware (embodied emissions) are included as well. For AWS and Google Cloud the tool also gives recommendations with projected savings. You run the software yourself, through a command-line application and a web frontend, and can export the figures to CSV or connect them to your own dashboards. It is therefore an alternative to the carbon reports that cloud providers offer in their own consoles.
The software is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and sponsored by Thoughtworks, a consultancy founded in Chicago and, since November 2024, owned by funds advised by Apax Partners. The site presents software to run yourself rather than a hosted service: the analysis runs on your own infrastructure, so your billing data stays under your own control.
