Confinity: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Confinity is a content management system from ConX GmbH in Lucerne for managing the content and configuration of websites, mobile apps, customer portals, web applications and web shops in one place. It includes digital asset management with automatically cropped and optimised images, structured entry of business data such as branches, products and staff, a preview stage alongside the public one, versioning, roles and groups for access rights, on-site editing, and tasks with workflow. Several websites with their own domains and designs run in a single instance, and the admin interface can be extended with custom functions.

ConX GmbH is headquartered in Switzerland, and the site names no foreign owner. Confinity can run on-premise on your own infrastructure, in the cloud with a provider of your choice such as Azure or AWS, or as SaaS operated by ConX. The site does not say where the SaaS option is hosted, so ask the vendor. If you run it yourself, you decide the location. Switzerland is not an EU member state but is an EFTA country with an EU adequacy decision.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Confinity

Confinity is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Confinity runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Confinity is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Confinity together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
