EGOCMS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

EGOCMS is a modular web content management system for internet portals, intranets and extranets, developed for complex and security-critical projects. The base module can be extended with modules, for example for workflows with freely defined statuses, an events calendar, newsletters, search, rights management and accessibility tools. One installation can manage several websites; an automatic translation module uses DeepL. According to the maker, several thousand editors can work on it at once. EGOCMS is open source under the GPLv3 licence, and the source code is in a public GitLab repository.

EGOCMS is developed by EGOTEC AG in Mosbach, Germany. The website names no parent company. Because the software can be downloaded freely and hosted yourself, you choose the hosting location and keep control of the data. Note that optional modules, such as automatic translation, call external services; check how those handle data. For European organisations this is an open foundation for websites and intranets, developed in Germany.

Why digital sovereignty matters with EGOCMS

EGOCMS is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so EGOCMS scores best on data residency.

EGOCMS is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs EGOCMS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
