Dagster: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Dagster is an open-source data orchestrator for building, running and monitoring data pipelines. Pipelines are defined as Python code around the data assets they produce, such as tables, datasets, ML models and reports; Dagster tracks dependencies and lineage and provides observability, diagnostics and a catalogue. It has native integrations with tools such as dbt, Snowflake and Fivetran. You can install the open-source version from PyPI and run it yourself, or use Dagster+, the managed offering, in Serverless mode or in Hybrid mode, where your own compute keeps running and Dagster hosts the control plane.

Dagster is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and developed by Dagster Labs, a US company. In July 2026 Prefect announced it would acquire Dagster Labs; the project says the open-source project and Dagster+ continue. Self-hosting keeps everything under your control. Dagster+ EU hosts the control plane, metadata and operational data in European data centres (region eu-north-1), for both Serverless and Hybrid; under Hybrid only orchestration metadata flows to Dagster+. The provider remains a US company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Dagster

Dagster is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Dagster hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Dagster is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Dagster together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
