DATIS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

DATIS from the French company INSPEERE is a distributed, immutable backup storage infrastructure, designed as the storage target for existing backup software. According to the vendor it is not backup software itself and works with Veeam, Acronis and NetBackup, among others. It is aimed at organisations such as local authorities, social landlords and mid-sized companies. The appliance is connected and powered on, after which backups run automatically. First an immutable local copy is created with ZFS snapshots. Then encrypted AES-256 fragments are spread off-site across a peer-to-peer network of DATIS appliances at customer and partner sites, with no third-party data centre or public cloud.

INSPEERE SAS is based in Poitiers, France; the pages consulted name no parent company. Because DATIS runs as an appliance at the customer, the organisation keeps physical control of the local copy. According to the vendor, the keys stay with the customer and fragments are not moved outside the EU without explicit agreement. For a European organisation this is a backup option without dependence on a US cloud; do check which partners hold fragments.

Why digital sovereignty matters with DATIS

DATIS is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

DATIS runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

DATIS is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs DATIS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
