Delta Lake: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Delta Lake is an open-source storage framework for building a lakehouse architecture. It adds ACID transactions with serialisability to data lakes, with scalable metadata for very large tables, time travel to earlier versions, unified batch and streaming, schema enforcement and evolution, and an audit history. Delta Lake works with engines including Spark, Trino, Flink, PrestoDB and Hive. It is a software layer you deploy yourself, not a hosted service.

According to its website, Delta Lake is an independent project that is not controlled by any single company. It has been part of the Linux Foundation since 2019 and follows a published charter; the code is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. Because you run the layer yourself, you decide where the data resides: in your own data centre or with a European storage and cloud provider. The open format and open source code limit lock-in, including when commercial platforms offer their own implementation.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Delta Lake

Delta Lake is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Delta Lake hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Delta Lake is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Delta Lake together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
