Duplicacy: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Duplicacy is a cross-platform backup tool that sends files to local disks, SFTP servers and many cloud storage services, including Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Google Drive and Microsoft Azure. It uses what the vendor calls lock-free deduplication, which manages data chunks without a central database, and it offers client-side encryption. Several computers can back up to the same storage and share deduplicated data. Duplicacy is software you run yourself, either with a browser-based web interface or as a command-line tool, and it is published by Acrosync LLC.

The source code is available on GitHub and may be modified and redistributed, but commercial use requires a paid licence, so it is not open source in the usual sense. The command-line version is free for personal use. Because Duplicacy runs on your own systems and you choose the storage backend, you decide where backups are kept, for example with an EU-based provider or on your own SFTP server. The vendor's website does not state where Acrosync LLC is located.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Duplicacy

Duplicacy is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Duplicacy hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Duplicacy is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Duplicacy together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
